Hypnosis For Eating Disorders
Those who begin to research hypnosis for eating disorders have usually exhausted every other avenue before reaching this point.
Many of my clients have tried counselling or other forms of talk therapy to overcome their problem, with little or no success. They feel frustrated because they are tired of talking about the problem; they just want to do something about it.
How Does Hypnotherapy Work for Eating Problems?
There are all kinds of causes and conditions that contribute to problems such as anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating disorders.
Many emotional and psychological factors are at play so often it’s not quite as simple as treating the symptom alone. For example, many people who struggle with disordered eating also suffer from;
- Anxiety and depression;
- Low self-esteem;
- Poor body image;
- Feeling out of control
A good hypnotherapist will pay particular attention to the underlying causes of the illness, rather than just focusing on the symptoms.
Can Eating Disorders Be Cured with Hypnosis?
I think it’s important to have a really honest conversation about the role of hypnotherapy in the recovery of a person with an eating disorder.
Eating disorders are incredibly complex, and therefore they require regular ongoing treatment with medical professionals and other resources.
Let me be clear:
A hypnotherapist cannot just wave a magic wand and make the problem go away. Any hypnotherapist who tells you this is not being honest with you, so I encourage you to remember that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.
I say this because I know that there are a lot of people out there who are suffering and those people deserve to have the correct information so they can make an informed decision about how to approach their recovery.
With this in mind, hypnosis can be a fantastic tool to be used as an adjunct to any ongoing treatment you are currently receiving. If you’re seeking hypnotherapy treatment for anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder, give me a call today.
How Hypnosis Can Help
There are several ways that I approach working with a client who has an eating disorder:
- The first step involves information gathering, where I talk to the client and get an understanding of which factors are exacerbating the eating disorder;
- Secondly, the sessions involve hypnosis to address the conditions and beliefs that are causing or exacerbating the eating disorder;
- And finally, at some point the client has to be willing to make changes to their behaviour. This can be a really scary concept for some, so I work with each client to desensitise them to fear they may be experiencing at the thought of changing their eating behaviour.
This is an incredibly important step, and it involves meeting the client where they are and setting goals with them that will allow them to actively challenge their perceived fears around food, mealtimes and eating on a daily basis.
So, as you can see, this is a collaborative process between myself and the client that requires action on both sides.
Before you decide to work with a hypnotherapist, use your own discernment; research your hypnotherapist and make sure you choose someone you feel comfortable with.
Hypnosis for eating disorders can be very helpful, provided you use common sense and continue to work alongside your current medical practitioner.
